Asphalt Cement
Asphalt Cement is a product derived from the refining of crude oil. It is a strong and versatile binding material with weather and chemical resistant characteristics that can be used ideally for road, bridge, highway and runway construction and maintenance works.
Asphalt Composition
- The solid part, Asphaltenes, looks like black powder.
- The liquid parts are resins, aromatics, and moisture.
Type of Asphalt
Asphalt can be divided into into 3 types:
- Asphalt Cement is a product derived from the refining of crude oil. It is a strong and versatile binding material with weather and chemical resistant characteristics that can be used ideally for road, bridge, highway and runway construction and maintenance works.
- Cutback Asphalt is liquid asphalt produced by blending asphalt cement with petroleum solvent. Cutback asphalt is used to reduce asphalt viscosity for road applications. After cutback asphalt is applied the petroleum solvent evaporates leaving behind asphalt cement on the surface to which it was applied.
- Asphalt Emulsion is a liquid asphalt with combination of three main ingredients of asphalt, water, and emulsifier. Key properties of the asphalt in asphalt emulsion are cohesion and waterproofing which can be used in cold processes for road construction and maintenance by applying on the road surface with or without mixing with the aggregate.

- Modified Asphalt Emulsion is a premium grade of asphalt emulsion produced by mixing the asphalt emulsion with polymer or other appropriate materials to yield greater quality advantages over normal asphalt emulsion.
- Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) is an improved asphalt cement produced by blending either natural polymer (such as natural rubber) or synthetic polymer (such as SBS or EVA). PMA will provide better strength and durability to road surfaces than conventional asphalt cement used in hot mix asphalt (HMA)
- Premium Asphalt is asphalt cement that is modified to achieve superior quality (Performance Grade) which is classified by performance according to the applicant or designated temperatures and/or conditions.
Applications by Asphalt Type
- Tipco Premix is a pre-mixed asphalt product consisting of selected aggregate and specially formulated asphalt. Tipco premix is used for pothole patching and/or temporary road surface repair for both asphalt and concrete based surfaces for various areas such as roadways, footpaths, walkways, curbs, speedbumps, parking lots, residential streets, and temporary ramps.
- Tipco Joint Sealer is the hot-applied joint sealant for horizontal concrete joints for roads and highways. With excellent elastic and adhesive properties, it also can be used to repair cracks in concrete caused by expansion or contraction.
CSS-1 is the slow-setting asphalt emulsion, used for Prime Coat application. Key properties of the asphalt in asphalt emulsion are cohesion and waterproofing which can be used in cold processes for road construction and maintenance by applying on the road surface with or without mixing with the aggregate.
CRS-2 is a rapid-setting asphalt emulsion, used as a binder between pavement layers (Tack Coat), key property is cohesion and waterproofing.
Product Safety & Handling Recommendations:
Sample containers should be dry and clean, not contaminated with oil or solder flux with recommendations for storage according to the type of asphalt as follows:
- Asphalt Cement: Avoid working or storing near any source of flame or excessive heat.
Temperature in the storage tanks should not exceed 150°C as the quality may be affected. - Asphalt Emulsion: Storage containers should be dry and clean, do not use a high-pressure pump to pump the product, and avoid rigorous agitation.
- Cutback Asphalt: Avoid working or storing near any source of flame or excess heat, storage containers should be dry and clean.
- Modified Asphalt Emulsion: Storage containers should be dry and clean, do not use a high-pressure pump to pump the product, and avoid rigorous agitation.
- Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA): Temperature in storage tanks should not exceed 180°C as the quality may be affected and avoid working or storing near any source of flame or excessive heat.
- Premium Asphalt (Performance Grade): Temperature in storage tanks should not exceed 180°C as the quality may be affected and avoid working or storing near any source of flame or excessive heat.
